Helmets

In 2003 the UCI, the governing body of cycling, introduced new rules concerning the use of helmets in all road race events. Reg 1.3.031 provides that during competitions on the road, a rigid safety headgear shall be worn·.

As you are aware the BBA already has a rule making the wearing of a rigid helmet compulsory in road races and the Executive in the latter part of 2003 made a decision, in the interest of safety, to adopt the new UCI rule in respect of rigid safety headgear in time trial events.

Unfortunately in spite of every good intention, the new rule was not communicated to the membership prior to the start of the 2004 season.

Under the circumstances, while the BBA rule is ãthat fairings (non protective helmets) will not be permitted and all riders even in time trials, must wear rigid safety headgearä, we will give riders until the 2005 season to comply.

The wearing of rigid safety headgear (hardshell protective helmets) will be mandatory in 2005.
