2011 Championships - Jamaica
With departure delayed by weather Team Bermuda finally arrived in Montego Bay, Jamaica for the 2011 Elite Caribbean Cycling Championships on Saturday, a mere two days late.
Unfortunately this meant that Shannon and Mark missed the time trial which was won by Willy Rousseau of Martinique. He has now won this three times (still one short of Kris Hedges' record!).
The road race on Sunday was 72 miles (10 laps of 7.2) along a flat road with headwind before turning to a hill where all the sorting out took place.
Once again the fates of cycling were in play with Mark Hatherley getting knocked off the bike by a rider behind him at the first 180 turn. That left Mark to chase a disappearing peloton.
Adam Harbutt then suffered a flat on the rough surface of the hill and he was then only able to join Mark and a group of chasers. Shannon Lawrence saw some action in an early break which eventually came back and he later also suffered a puncture.
Darren Glasford hung in until about 2 1/2 laps to go when the attacks got crazy. The race was won by Cedric Eustache of Martinique from a breakaway that survived half the race.
In the women's races, the time trial was won by Tamiko Butler of Antigua Shalini Zabahneh of Belize took the road race gold.
Thanks to Arthur Glasford for his work organizing the team.
