CYCLING NEWS

2009 CATLIN END TO END

Many thanks to all who participated and supported this important community event, especially Steve Dean who organized Team BBA.  The group has raised $1,227 on top of registration fees, making it the 7th highest fundraising team.  You can still pledge funds by going to the event's site www.bermudaendtoend.bm/teampages/36.  Steve has agreed to coordinate our efforts in this event in 2010 so we should be able to do even more.  Don't know Steve?  Here is a wallet size photo you can clip out and carry with you through the year.

One item of concern is the large number of cyclists who did not wear a helmet.  Kids, adults, it made no difference.  I'm sure none of them have had a bad crash and learned first hand the benefits of head protection like Hayley Evans and Chris Harkness. But there must be a way to get this message out beyond the BBA membership and does not require another Learn-a-lots appearance.

ANGUILLA, ANYONE?

The Anguilla Amateur Cycling Association has sent an invitation to the BBA to participate in the 2009 John T Memorial Cycle Race on July 5th.  Naturally, it will be held in Anguilla and includes a 138 km road race on July 5th as well as an individual time trial the day before.  If there are BBA members interested in participating or who would like additional information on this race then contact us at president@bermudabicycle.org.  Organizers will help with accommodations and board.  Travel costs would be your own.

RACING MATTERS

VICTORIA PARK CRIT - RESULTS?

It is widely known that the results from this great race were spotty in some categories.  Work is afoot to improve things.  Expanded results are below but in some categories the crew was unable to provide complete results.  So you will see that where there are 20 guys in 8th place for the male B race it means that after 7 they could not get it in the right order.  These 20 8th's are not in any order so the list should not suggest that Ian Fox beat Tim Fox.  It may have happened this way but we don't know. Next week we will have information on how we will better score these events.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS

As always, there is a limit of 60 riders for this prestigious  race and if you want to be a part of it then make sure you meet the standard.

First, the race is open only to those who are BBA members.

Second, you must be racing in any of the adult categories or Junior A.

Third, you must have finished 2 of the 2009 road race series races.  The Tuesday training crits do not count towards the number of races.

If we have open spots after taking all those who have met the three criteria and want to ride the race directors (BBA Executive Committee) will offer spots to others who express an interest in racing the event at their discretion.  If you want to enjoy the thrill of this event and don't want to be subject to the whims of 5 grumpy guys then get racing.  The remaining event that will get you qualified is the road race on May17th.

SATURDAY AM "FINISH LINE"

For those who are regular participants in the 6:15AM ride on Saturdays, you may have noted that the group is getting bigger and riding very well.  It has been suggested that for the conclusion of the fast part of the ride (notice that I'm avoiding saying "end of the race" as it is not a Race), participants use the Aberfeldy sign on The Lane and cool down along East Broadway and Front Street.

Picture of the week

Steve Dean was going to occupy this spot until Jennifer Hedges came up with her pictures from Paris-Roubaix.  Of course you have to be a friend of Jennifer on Facebook to see them all (I've got a friend now!).  When you're talking Paris-Roubaix you immediately think of the fabled cobbles of the course so here is Jennifer's shot of the boys charging along a section that would send you straight to the chiropractor or to Jeff Amaral's crew for re-paving.  I'm sure that's George Hincapie on the left in the yellow Columbia kit and his trademark glasses.   For more of Jen's pictures find her on Facebook and beg to be her friend!

If you want to submit a picture or two for the next newsletter then please forward the image to newsletter@bermudabicycle.org.
