CYCLING NEWS
FIRST AID COURSE BEING PLANNED
St. John's Ambulance is offering BBA members the opportunity to take an eight hour program of first aid and is being coordinated by Steve Gunn. Below is his outline of the proposed program and if you are interested in this then please contact Steve. This is a great initiative and depending on the numbers who participate it is likely that the BBA will cover the registration fee so that there is no cost to participate.
Good Day, first off please allow me to introduce myself to any new members of the Bicycle association who do not know me. I am Stephen Gunn, the father of Ryan Gunn. I am also a First aid/CPR instructor, ITLS (International Trauma and Life Support) with St. John’s Ambulance of Bermuda.
As all riders and family members of the riders know, cycling can be a very dangerous sport, even with the use of safety head gear. We also know that most accidents that occur involve more than one cyclist, which can result in a multi-casualty incident. There have been instances where more than one accident has occurred and spectators have come to either my assistance, or the assistance of the riders. For this I am extremely grateful. However, although having a willingness to help and render first aid is admirable and commendable, having the knowledge and tools to effectively assess and administer First aid is essential.
For this reason I would like to offer, on behalf of St. John’s Ambulance of Bermuda, an 8 hour Emergency First-aid /CPR course to members and family members of the Bermuda Bicycle Association. The regular cost of the course is $85. However, St. John’s in partnership with the Bermuda Bicycle Association is offering this course to MEMBERS and IMMEDIATE family members (including children age 12 and up) of the Bermuda Bicycle Association for $45.
This is an excellent certification to hold which includes proper Emergency Scene Management, proper first aid for Sprains/Strains/Breaks and open wounds. It will also cover CPR and mass casualty incidents.
No date has been set yet as I would like to get an idea of how many interested participants there would be. If the number of people interested is substantial enough then more than one class can be arranged. I will be dropping off sign-up sheets at Bicycle Works and Winner’s edge early next week to see what the interest is. Once we have a number then we can start considering dates.
I can be reached at the following email address if anyone has any questions.

SATURDAY AM "FINISH LINE"
For those who are regular participants in the 6:15AM ride on Saturdays, you may have noted that the group is getting bigger and riding very well. It has been suggested that for the conclusion of the fast part of the ride (notice that I'm avoiding saying "end of the race" as it is not a Race), participants use the Aberfeldy sign on The Lane and cool down along East Broadway and Front Street.

RACING MATTERS
SINCLAIR PACKWOOD MEMORIAL RACE - WRAP UP

It was a great start to the Bermuda Day holiday with 58 riders at the start line in Somerset. Thanks to the Bermuda Police Service for doing such a great job in making sure the course was clear and for all of the marshals who came out to secure junctions along the route. Of course, the finish line crew did a fine job and extra appreciation has been showered upon them. Kim Day got the entire group functioning well and Keith Fenn's assistance was heaven sent. The media coverage was very good this year with VSB radio commentary by Charles "Not the Voice of Summer" Dunstan , video services provided by Bermuda Sports Network and Earl Basden of IslandStats.com taking photos. These guys were artfully chauffeured along the course by Karl Outerbridge in his decal covered vehicle while Mark Stephenson followed in the IBC sweep vehicle. And lastly, thanks to Jim & Debbie Butterfield for their sponsorship of our most prestigious race.
There was also a bike race going on and the full results are below.

MAY 31st HANDICAP ROAD RACE
This Sunday is the handicap road race at Southside, starting at 8:00AM. The race will see groups set by the Secret Selectors set off on a 24 mile race starting at Ft. Knox and riding 5 loops of the course which will go out to Clearwater Beach parking lot and back. The handicap race is for those in adult categories plus Junior A and registration is $10 ($5 for juniors). All entry fees for this will go to prizes. Junior B and C riders will race right after the adults and will ride a regular race around the Ft. Knox crit course. There will be no entry fee for the Junior B & C race.
We need 12 volunteers for this race. All riders need to provide 2 volunteers during the season so don't miss this opportunity! With such a short race distance and an early start this isn't a very taxing chance to fulfil your obligation.
If you know you are racing this event then please send Jeff Amaral (jeff@conrads.bm) a note so that he can pass the list on to the handicappers

Rolling through Southampton on Monday morning, Undray Hill figured it was his turn at the front of the pack. Good timing, plenty of pictures to prove it! Earl Basden has posted dozens of great shots captured from the lead vehicle, adding corroborating images to the many tales of the race. Check out Earl's pictures at www.islandstats.com
