CYCLING NEWS
FIRST AID COURSE BEING PLANNED
St. John's Ambulance is offering BBA members the opportunity to take an eight hour program of first aid and is being coordinated by Steve Gunn. Below is his outline of the proposed program and if you are interested in this then please contact Steve. This is a great initiative and depending on the numbers who participate it is likely that the BBA will cover the registration fee so that there is no cost to participate.
Good Day, first off please allow me to introduce myself to any new members of the Bicycle association who do not know me. I am Stephen Gunn, the father of Ryan Gunn. I am also a First aid/CPR instructor, ITLS (International Trauma and Life Support) with St. John’s Ambulance of Bermuda.
As all riders and family members of the riders know, cycling can be a very dangerous sport, even with the use of safety head gear. We also know that most accidents that occur involve more than one cyclist, which can result in a multi-casualty incident. There have been instances where more than one accident has occurred and spectators have come to either my assistance, or the assistance of the riders. For this I am extremely grateful. However, although having a willingness to help and render first aid is admirable and commendable, having the knowledge and tools to effectively assess and administer First aid is essential.
For this reason I would like to offer, on behalf of St. John’s Ambulance of Bermuda, an 8 hour Emergency First-aid /CPR course to members and family members of the Bermuda Bicycle Association. The regular cost of the course is $85. However, St. John’s in partnership with the Bermuda Bicycle Association is offering this course to MEMBERS and IMMEDIATE family members (including children age 12 and up) of the Bermuda Bicycle Association for $45.
This is an excellent certification to hold which includes proper Emergency Scene Management, proper first aid for Sprains/Strains/Breaks and open wounds. It will also cover CPR and mass casualty incidents.
No date has been set yet as I would like to get an idea of how many interested participants there would be. If the number of people interested is substantial enough then more than one class can be arranged. I will be dropping off sign-up sheets at Bicycle Works and Winner’s edge early next week to see what the interest is. Once we have a number then we can start considering dates.
I can be reached at the following email address if anyone has any questions.

CYCLING VARSITY SPORT AT BERKELEY
Nine students were recognized at Berkeley Institute's Student-Athlete Awards Ceremony last week for their continued participation in cycling this year. It's thrilling to see the school respond so favorably towards the program and to reward the students in front of their peers. Pictured above are (L-R) Che-Quan Richardson, Dominique Mayho, Tremayne Bean, Michaela Eberly, Alton O'Connor, Shawn Herman and Tre-Shun Correia . Missing from the picture are Marquis Cann and Brandon Morris. Dominique was also named Most Improved Cyclist. Special thanks to Mr. Richard North of the Berkeley PE staff for his assistance and dedication to this new program.
MAYBE A BERKELEY FIRST AID COURSE?
Speaking of first aid and Berkeley, Michaela Eberly broke her wrist at the crit last night but thankfully not too badly. She is in a cast but already asking about how she can continue to train while in plaster. Sounds like countless hours on the wind trainer and frequent charging of the iPod. |
RACING MATTERS
MAY 31st HANDICAP ROAD RACE WRAP UP
For all of the planning, scheming and organizational effort, someone forgot to get the weather straight. The race was cancelled due to the excessive rain, though by 9:00 the sun was doing its thing.
HAMILTON CRIT THIS SUNDAY
After the success of the Victoria Park crit Jeff Amaral has cajolled the Corporation and Police to approve another Hamilton crit for this Sunday.
Finally we have confirmation that we can race in Hamilton Sunday but we have had to alter the course and times as there is a lot going on in Hamilton this weekend with Regiment parade rehearsals and Concerts in the Park.
Start time is 7:30 for Male B NOT 8:00 AS PREVIOUSLY STATED
Parking is recommended in Par La Ville parking lot if arriving before 7:30 and planning to stay until the end, alternatively park in City Hall car park.
Start/ Finish will be at the entrance to Par La Ville parking lot.
The course will be:
Start/ Finish on Church St at Par La Ville parking lot entrance.
Head east on Church, Turn right on Queen St, Turn right on Front St, Turn right on Par La Ville, Turn right on Church and back to S/F
All roads will be closed with the exception of Church St which will have 1 lane open for traffic heading west.
The schedule of races is as follows:
7:30 Male B (30 min plus a lap)
8:10 Jr, B (20 min plus a lap) Jr. C (10 min plus a lap)
8:35 Jr A and Female B (30 min plus a lap)
9:10 Male A (40 min plus a lap )
We must be finished and roads open by 10:30
FINISH LINE HELP, PLEASE
The order of the races has been set so that riders can help score the other races. We would like the Male A riders to help on the finish line for the Male B race and the Male B's to stick around to help with the Male A race. If you have not done this before that is fine, you can be taught a new trick. Race numbers will be assigned for the Male B, Junior A and Male A races to aid in the scoring process but we need your assistance. Please do not be surprised if you are asked to assist.
