CYCLING NEWS

FIRST AID COURSE BEING PLANNED

St. John's Ambulance is offering BBA members the opportunity to take an eight hour program of first aid  and is being coordinated by Steve Gunn.  Below is his outline of the proposed program and if you are interested in this then please contact Steve.  This is a great initiative and depending on the numbers who participate it is likely that the BBA will cover the registration fee so that there is no cost to participate.

Good Day, first off please allow me to introduce myself to any new members of the Bicycle association who do not know me. I am Stephen Gunn, the father of Ryan Gunn. I am also a First aid/CPR instructor, ITLS (International Trauma and Life Support) with St. John’s Ambulance of Bermuda.

As all riders and family members of the riders know, cycling can be a very dangerous sport, even with the use of safety head gear. We also know that most accidents that occur involve more than one cyclist, which can result in a multi-casualty incident. There have been instances where more than one accident has occurred and spectators have come to either my assistance, or the assistance of the riders. For this I am extremely grateful. However, although having a willingness to help and render first aid is admirable and commendable, having the knowledge and tools to effectively assess and administer First aid is essential.
For this reason I would like to offer, on behalf of St. John’s Ambulance of Bermuda, an 8 hour Emergency First-aid /CPR course to members and family members of the Bermuda Bicycle Association. The regular cost of the course is $85. However, St. John’s in partnership with the Bermuda Bicycle Association is offering this course to MEMBERS and IMMEDIATE family members (including children age 12 and up) of the Bermuda Bicycle Association for $45.
This is an excellent certification to hold which includes proper Emergency Scene Management, proper first aid for Sprains/Strains/Breaks and open wounds. It will also cover CPR and mass casualty incidents.
No date has been set yet as I would like to get an idea of how many interested participants there would be. If the number of people interested is substantial enough then more than one class can be arranged. I will be dropping off sign-up sheets at Bicycle Works and Winner’s edge early next week to see what the interest is. Once we have a number then we can start considering dates.
I can be reached at the following email address if anyone has any questions.

RACING MATTERS

HAMILTON CRIT RESULTS

Jeff Amaral once again found a great crit course in Hamilton and the boys of the Corporation of Hamilton made it all go smoothly.  A bit of rain discouraged a few from taking to the streets and more than one rider felt the impact of tarmac on skin.  Full category results can be found below.  Thanks to all who helped with results and marshalling.

QUEEN'S BIRTHDAY / NATIONAL HEROES DAY STAGE RACE

THIS WEEKEND

With the June holiday graciously reinstated we have moved the two day/three stage race to Sunday and Monday.  Riders can ride one, two or three stages and the overall winners will be determined on points, not time.  The winner of a stage will get 1 point, second 2 points , third 3 and so on.  Overall winner has the lowest number of points and a tie after three stages will be split by the actual time in the hill climb.  The event details are as follows:

Stage 1 - Morgan's Point Circuit - Sunday, Jun 14

Male & Female A: 30 miles, 15 laps starting at 8:30AM

Female B & Junior A : 20 miles, 10 laps starting at approximately 9:50AM

Junior B: 10 miles, 5 laps starting at approximately 9:50AM

Junior C: 2 miles, 1 lap starting at approximately 9:50AM

Male B: 20 miles, 10 laps starting at approximately 10:50AM

Stage 2 - Ft. Knox Crit - Monday, June 15

Course is behind St. David's police station.

Male B: 30 min + 1 lap starting at 8:30AM

Female B and Junior A: 30 min + 1 lap starting at approximately 9:10AM

Junior C: 10 min + 1 lap starting at approximately 9:45AM

Male & Female A: 45 min + 1 lap starting at approximately 10:00AM

Stage 3 - St. David's Hill Climb

Riders will be sent off on 30 second intervals from Great Head Park and climbing to the St. David's Lighthouse.  First rider will go as close to 11:00AM as possible.

This event is part of the road race series.  Series points are awarded for the first two stages.  Entry fees are $10 per day for adults ($5 for juniors) but included in series prepaid registration.

We will require marshals and finish line helpers.  Please come out and support this event.

RACE NUMBERS

Last week we issued race numbers for some categories to make the scoring easier.  The intent is that you will retain this number and wear it at future races.  If for some reason you have disposed of the number please obtain a new one from the race directors.  But do your best to keep the number as we are not going to be buying new  ones each week.  Numbers are not to be folded or reduced in size for racing.  If you do not wear the number or have it altered then you will not be recorded in the results.

Picture of the week

Apparently if you wear a pink shirt at the Giro d'Italia then all sorts of cycling team cheerleaders mistake you for Dennis Menchov or Danilo DiLuca.  Or maybe Martin Boltini does have a strong following among employees of the Liquigas team staff.  Anyway, he went to Italy, he wore a pink jersey, and he got his picture taken with a young lady.  Next stop must be France?  Don't forget to pack the yellow top.
