2009 JUNIOR CYCLING CAMP

The BBA's summer camp for young cyclists will be held July 6-10 at Southside and registration is now open.  The camp will be run by Geri Mewett and two cycling colleagues.  Details are in the registration form below.

We are also seeking housing for Geri's colleagues from July 5th to the 12th.  My understanding is that they are house trained and generally well-behaved young men.  If you or someone you know could assist us in providing accommodations for them it would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Nigel Godfrey at ngodfrey@ibl.bm if you can help.

JUNIOR CARIBBEAN CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2009 - BERMUDA

You will see from the calendar above that we are hosting the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships this July 25 and 26.  At this point it looks like there will be 70 participants from 13 countries, including about 10 juniors representing Bermuda. We will require a huge number of volunteers for these races and it is hoped that all BBA members will come out to support the events.  Nigel Godfrey is coordinating the time trial which will use a similar structure to the Escape to Bermuda cycling leg.  With traffic closed in one direction for the duration of the TT we need about 150 volunteers along the course to make it as safe as possible.  The good news is that the TT starts at 7:00AM and will only take until 8:30 for all of the participants to finish.  If you live along Middle Road in Paget, Warwick and Southampton (to Barnes Corner) or South Road from Barnes Corner to Bermuda College then all you would need to do is step outside in your bathrobe and cover an intersection.

The road race will use the Hamilton course we ran for the Bermuda Grand Prix last year, including Corkscrew Hill.  Jeff and Martin are getting this organized and support within this closed circuit will be needed.

So please put these dates in your calendar and come help.   Sign up sheets for volunteers will be distributed next week.

RACING MATTERS

FATHER'S DAY ROAD RACE

Suffice it to say this this first of its kind event was a tremendous success.  All the thanks go to Jeff Amaral and Darren Glasford for getting the approvals from appropriate authorities and for the support of the police service.  Everyone who participated voice only praise for the organization and how safe the event felt.  And, of course, total honors to first to Rodney Davies and Kent Richardson for taking taking first and second, having worked for virtually the entire race to stay away from the pack.  Note to everyone else: don't let two powerful time trial specialists get away together!  Wish I could have seen the sprint!

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS WEEKEND

REGISTRATION

The Time Trial and Road Race championships will be held on Saturday, June 27 and Sunday, June 28, respectively.  Below is the registration form and you must sign up by June 25.  There is one form for both events but you don't have to do both.

The Time trial starts very early on Saturday to avoid traffic so set your alarm!  This year we are having one race for adult men and one for adult women.  No adult category races.  There is also a junior championship race for anyone 18 years or younger who wants to contest for the title of junior national champion.  We will also have races for Junior B and C.

ROAD RACE INFORMATION

Please see the two documents below.  We are also working on having neutral wheels for this event at each of the three pits plus one set on a vehicle (car or scooter) behind the leaders.  If you have a spare set of wheels that you would be willing to put in the pits then bring them along.  Teams, please take on this task and bring 2 front and 4 rear wheels for use as neutral equipment.  Remember it is better to have neutral wheels all along the course then hope that your flat occurs right by the place you have put your wheels.  If you are interested in providing the mobile support then contact race director Elliot Hubbard at Elliot.Hubbard@conyersdillandpearman.com

VOLUNTEERS

We require additional volunteers for both events. There are still some plum assignments left and your assistance is needed (as always).  Maybe you could ask a friend (if you have one) or a family member you still talk to?  How about that neighbor you let borrow your lawn mower?  Surely there is someone you would like to intoduce to the excitement of bicycle racing and there's nothing like a national championship to get the juices flowing.  Contact either Nigel or Elliot (addresses above) if you can help.

STUFF FOR SALE OR OTHER

Hello,
My name is Zach Landry. I am a student staying at the Bermuda Biological Station for a few weeks and am looking to purchase a cheap bicycle if possible. It doesn't need to be fast, or in particularly good shape, it just needs to be able to ride from point A to point B without falling apart. I don't really know where to look for one, but I thought that some of your members might point me in the right direction or be able to sell me an old road bike or something. If you could help me out, that would be great.

Thank you very much,
Zachary Landry - zclandry@gmail.com

Picture of the week

With Molly Doyle shooting at the Queen's Birthday Ft. Know Crit we got some great images of all the races.  Here Annabella Doyle (no relation to M O'B) and Molly Pilgrim (even less of a relation) preparing to work over an unsuspecting Nico Barkley as they head into the final lap.  Very impressive racing by all of them, hinting that the future looks bright.
