2009 JUNIOR CYCLING CAMP

The BBA's summer camp for young cyclists will be held next week, July 6-10 at Southside and registration is now open.  The camp will be run by Geri Mewett and two cycling colleagues.  Details are in the registration form below.

We are also seeking housing for Geri's colleagues from July 5th to the 12th.  My understanding is that they are house trained and generally well-behaved young men.  If you or someone you know could assist us in providing accommodations for them it would be greatly appreciated. Please contact Nigel Godfrey at ngodfrey@ibl.bm if you can help.

JUNIOR CARIBBEAN CYCLING CHAMPIONSHIPS 2009 - BERMUDA

You will see from the calendar above that we are hosting the Junior Caribbean Cycling Championships this July 25 and 26.  At this point it looks like there will be 70 participants from 13 countries, including about 10 juniors representing Bermuda. We will require a huge number of volunteers for these races and it is hoped that all BBA members will come out to support the events.  Nigel Godfrey is coordinating the time trial which will use a similar structure to the Escape to Bermuda cycling leg.  With traffic closed in one direction for the duration of the TT we need about 150 volunteers along the course to make it as safe as possible.  The good news is that the TT starts at 7:00AM and will only take until 8:30 for all of the participants to finish.  If you live along Middle Road in Paget, Warwick and Southampton (to Barnes Corner) or South Road from Barnes Corner to Bermuda College then all you would need to do is step outside in your bathrobe and cover an intersection.

The road race will use the Hamilton course we ran for the Bermuda Grand Prix last year, including Corkscrew Hill.  Jeff and Martin are getting this organized and support within this closed circuit will be needed.

A separate letter is going to out requesting that you sign up to assist us in these events.  Please respond favorably, it is only a short amount of time to give back to the sport.  Plus, you get to see some fabulous racing!

CONGRADULATIONS GRADUATES

Join us in congratulating Philip Woolridge and Aaron Place on their recent graduation from high school.  Philip has completed his studies at Warwick Academy and Aaron was awarded his BSC yesterday at CedarBridge Academy.

RACING MATTERS

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS WEEKEND

THANKS

National championships weekend has come and gone with several new champions being crowned and a few returning.  Garth and Dee retained their time trial titles while Dee also picked up the road race win.  Scott Williams put in a spectacular performance in the road race to take the honors.  In the juniors, Ryan  Gunn doubled in the TT and RR while Molly Pilgrim took the junior girls road race and Izabella Arnold scooped the TT prize.  Congratulations to all those who participated and to the volunteers on both days.  Without your help these events would not be possible.  The race directors for the events, Nigel Godfrey & Jeff Amaral for the TT and Elliot Hubbard for the RR, put on great races and should be thanked by each participant.  Lastly, to our wonderful sponsors who have contributed to the success of these two important events for many years, their commitment to cycling in Bermuda is greatly appreciated.

Picture of the week

National championships are all about pushing it to the limit and Mark Godfrey may have found the limit!  Coming into the turn at the St. David's police station Mark might have cut it just a bit too tight and appears to have his machine heading in several directions simultaneously.   Being the dedicated athlete, Mark bounced up and chased his way back into the race.
