CYCLING NEWS

PRIMARY/MIDDLE SCHOOLS MTB CHAMPIONSHIP

This Sunday is the school MTB Championship at 1:00 at the Arboretum.  We could definitely use your assistance as there are rumors that turnout will be very high.  From set up to tear down will only be about 2 hours and there is only one Premiership League game that day and only Spike  and his stuffed animal care about Hull.  Please lend a hand with this event to encourage more junior cyclists.

If you can help please send an email to president@bermudabicyle.org

The road race season is upon us and you must be a member in order to race.  No membership, no start race.  Forms can be dropped at the the BBA boxes at Bicycle Works and Winners Edge for posted to the BBA at P.O. Box 192, Devonshire DVBX.

RACING MATTERS

MTB CHAMPIONS CROWNED

Sunday's slightly adverse weather pushed the awards presentation off until Tuesday but did not stop the Winners Edge Mountain Biking National Championship race to starting.  In torrential rain and 60kt winds the Ferry Reach course kept everyone on edge and yielded four national champions.  Garth Thomson carried home the Male NC award again, ahead of Grant Goudge and Mark Hatherley while Sarah Bonnett took the Female prize.  Junior champions are Dominique Mayho and Gabriella Arnold.  Thanks to Paulo Medeiros and Greg Hopkins for sponsoring the event again, especially Paulo who braved the weather on Sunday.  Full results are below including the junior non-championship races.  Congratulations to all who participated and we all hope Elizabeth's trail rash is getting her plenty of domestic sympathy.

ROAD SEASON APPROACHES, BE PREPARED

The 2010 road race season kicks off on March 14th with a "Jeff Amaral Special" crit in Hamilton.  Start/finish will be by the new HSBC Bank of Bermuda building on Front Street.  Course details will come out next week.

As announced at the meeting last week the road race series entry fees for this year will be as follows:

Adult Entry per race: $10

Adult entry season pre-paid: $75

Juniors (18 & under): No entry fees

The pre-paid form is below and should be dropped off at the BBA box at either Winners Edge or Bicycle Works.  Juniors are asked to complete a form so that the organizers have some idea as to what category you intend to join.

These costs apply just to the road races which form a part of the series.  Special events such as national championships, Sinclair Packwood Memorial  and Bermuda Grand Prix will have separate fees as usual.

Time trial costs for 2010 will be:

Adult Entry per race: $5

Junior Entry per race: $0

When the Tuesday evening crits resume the fee will be $2 per person regardless of age.

RACE DIRECTOR - THE BEST JOB ANYONE COULD HAVE

Jeff and Martin have compiled the series events into a spreadsheet and there are still several spots open for you to volunteer as race director.  By this time next week the boys will begin filling gaps by assigning riders to events so if you have a preference then make it known to Jeff at jeff@conrads.bm

STUFF FOR SALE OR OTHER

WANTED, HELMETS

As we have been promoting the school MTB event it has become evident that not so many kids have helmets.  If you have a helmet still in functioning condition that does not smell too bad, please consider donating it to the BBA school program.  Contact us at info@bermudabicycle.org and we can arrange for collection.

If you have a bike (road or mountain) in working condition but is just sitting there, neglected and unused, please consider donating it to the BBA for use in the schools programs.

Picture of the week

Liz Arnold's artistic image of Sarah Bonnett from Sunday's MTB race shows how windy and muddy the morning was even if slightly exaggerating the incline.  There were rivers running down the trails and the casuarinas were howling in the 60 knot gusts.  Visibility?  Who needs visibility?  If only every race day could have such perfect weather!
