Riding Safely

Wear a helmet
The number one thing you can do to improve safety - mandatory for all road races, time trials and club rides and highly recommended for all other occasions!

Make sure it is is good condition and properly fitted and fastened.

Replace it if it has taken a knock. Damage may not always be apparent.
Ride a roadworthy bike
Keep your bike roadworthy and well maintained - particularly the brakes and steering.
Check tires
Make sure your tires are in good condition and pumped up properly. Check the recommended pressure on your tires before each ride.
Use your ears
Your ears are an important safety device which can be severely impaired by wearing headphones - listen to the traffic, not music.
Ride on the left
For our overseas visitors!
Obey traffic rules
Obey stop signs, traffic lights - don’t pass vehicles on the inside - be an ambassador for all cyclists.
Not more than two abreast
Ride in single file when the roads are narrow and never ride more than two abreast. Be aware of other road users and avoid causing unnecessary obstruction to traffic flow.
Lights at in the dark
Make sure you have lights and that they are working - white at front, red at rear. Don’t get caught out by going out in the day without lights and then coming back later than expected – in the dark.
Ride defensively
Anticipate other road users not respecting the needs or rights of cyclists!
